Paul Driver in the Sunday Times compares the London Philharmonic Orchestra and New York Philharmonic performances of Sibelius:
“I’ll be pleased to attend another concert this year with the expressive reach of Vanska’s concluding programme, in which Sibelius’s Sixth and Seventh Symphonies were given in the second half, and his late tone poem Tapiola opened the first. The brilliant insightfulness and aliveness of the playing seemed in direct proportion to the lack of ego of the musicians. This was as far from an orchestral “exhibition” as could be. They were not asking us to admire their sound, surpassingly beautiful though it was, nor was the conductor beckoning with his back to us to love him. All had been transformed into an instrument for the thoughts, the amazing thoughts, of Sibelius.”

And a blog entry by pianist Stephen Hough in the Telegraph:
“I was only able to attend one of the concerts, the 4th and 5th Symphonies. They were extraordinary performances – craggy, rough-hewn, elemental readings, with a moss-off-the-mountains revelation of the works’ towering peaks.”
