Reviews 4: Britten Billy Budd at Glyndebourne

Britten’s Billy Budd reviewed by David Gillard in the Mail on Sunday (4 stars):

A sea mist occasionally seeps aboard, the Red Ensign flutters aft, moonlight washes lightly on Billy’s prison – but there is no other evocation of sea or sky.

Instead, this good-and- evil parable gets its gale-force power from the superbly detailed playing of the London Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Sir Mark Elder and the nail-biting tension engendered by Grandage and his fine cast.
